Award-winning actress Suzann McLean Announced As New Artistic Director Of Theatre Peckham

Award-winning screen and stage actress Suzann McLean will take on the role of Theatre Peckham’s Artistic Director this September.

McLean takes over from Teresa Early who has held the position for 33 years. The actress who has had roles in popular shows Casualty, LittleMiss Joycelyn, and Eastenders, and stage productions at the National Theatre, Young Vic and Hackney Empire says of the position:

“I am thrilled to be joining Theatre Peckham at this exciting time when it has an impressive new building to serve its local community. It will be an honour to lead a venue that truly values young people, their talent and their ability to positively impact the community. Young people have always been at the heart of all my work and I look forward to continuing the inspired work of Theatre Peckham’s founder Teresa Early.

“It’s wonderful that support from Arts Council England and the Borough of Southwark means we can build on the theatre’s reputation for staging great shows and reach out further to the excitingly diverse communities of South East London. I firmly believe that theatre does change lives and am proud to be championing the cause, in all its forms, as the new Artistic Director of Theatre Peckham.”

Described as a learning theatre Theatre Peckham’s is known for encouraging, supporting and introducing young people and children to the wonders of theatre. Promoting diversity and championing future theatre professionals and discovering new audiences. Casts include professional actors, and young people from the workshops, and young apprentice actors aged 16+.

McLean is the founder and director of the award-winning theatre school, Young & Talented, Saturday performing arts school for 6 – 16-year-olds, based in Bethnal Green. The school is its 14th year. McLean is Associate Artist at York Theatre Royal, an associate of Pilot Theatre and associate of the young people’s work at Theatre Royal Stratford East. She has directed stage productions and was asked to be a torch bearer at the 2012 Olympics.
