Please introduce yourself

Hi, I’m Crystal Clarke, and I am an actress from New Jersey and Tennessee, USA. My parents were born and raised in the West Indies, shout out to Trinidad and Guyana.

Describe your life right now in a word or one sentence …

Tell us about your role in Sanditon?

I play Georgiana Lambe, who is the only character of colour written in any work of Jane Austen. Georgiana is mixed race, and she has been brought to Sanditon from Antigua on her father’s wishes. As the richest heiress in Sanditon, all eyes are on her. We follow her on a journey of identity and constant battle for autonomy.

What has been your process for getting into character?

I like to write a backstory when I have prep time, and when I’m home running lines I pace back and forth to find where things fall in my body. For example, there’s always a rhythm to different accents and that usually informs my movement. I rely mainly on my instinct, and I’ve learned the less cerebral my approach is, the better.

What has being a part of the Sanditon series taught you as an actress?

During season 1, I watched others navigate a position of responsibility and leadership. The thought of ever being in that position really scared me. After seasons 2 and 3 I feel much more secure in my discipline as a professional and my compassion as a coworker. Under pressure, it’s easy to fight yourself and everyone else around you. So I was very proud of myself for staying present and “chill AF.”

Tell us a scene or moment from the entire three seasons that will always have a place in your heart?

The cliff scene between Charlotte and Georgiana from season 1-episode 2. That was my first day of work, and I am still so proud of what we accomplished.
