Comedian Emmanuel Sonubi is about to take his jokes on the road.
After landing a Dave’s Edinburgh Comedy Awards Best Newcomer nomination in 2022 Sonubi is being touted as the next big thing. And after his comedy show ‘Emancipated‘ sold out at the ’22 Edinburgh Fringe festival he’s ready to take the show on the road.
Having kicked off in Glasgow at the end of March, we spoke to Sonubi to find out what audiences can expect from the show …
Please introduce yourself …
Emmanuel Sonubi, London-based Stand up Comedian. Born in London to Nigerian Parents.
Describe your life right now in a word or one sentence …
Surreal. Literally living the life I dreamed for.
Tell us about your upcoming tour Emancipated?
This was a few years in the making and was held back due to Covid. However, that turned out to be a blessing as the material that came through during Covid was the material that made the show what it is.
Emmanuel Sonubi @ The Apollo
What can audiences expect?
They can expect to laugh out loud for a full hour. There are no hidden agendas in this piece, just an hour of straight comedy with a little something for everyone in it to relate to.
Highs, lows, solutions.
There haven’t really been any obstacles, just anxiety. When it comes to a tour, you’re really putting yourself out there. Club work on the circuit is easy because you’re going to see an audience who is already there. When it comes to your own tour, you have to build an audience which can be hard mentally. Especially at times when the building seems slow.
The moment you knew you were funny?
I was about 8. I got lost on a family holiday as a kid and ended up convincing someone to buy the toy that I had just gotten from my happy meal so I could have bus fare to get back to the holiday park. I made them laugh and they bought it. In hindsight, they probably should have not left me on my own and walked off with my toy.
If you could wake up as any other comedian who would that be?
I wouldn’t, to be honest. I just want to be the best me I can be.
Emmanuel Sonubi @ Stand Up Comedy Sketch Show
Favourite stand-up skit ever?
Eddie Murphy – Delirious
What’s your current plan B?
There isn’t one.
What’s made you Sad, Mad, Glad this week
Nothing has made me sad so far or mad, to be honest, but we added extra dates to the tour and a few more shows sold out which made me glad.
What are you watching right now?
The road as I’m driving. I’m actually re-watching The God Place on Netflix. It’s hilarious and takes a really fun look at philosophy.
What are you reading right now?
The new show I’m trying to write mainly, but you’ll have to wait till next year to see it.
What are you listening to right now?
Always 90’s/2000 R&B
The last thing you saw on stage?
A theatre performance on a cruise ship.
What’s on your bucket list?
To complete a 200-date UK theatre tour.
Celebrate someone else …
Darran Griffiths – He is an amazing act and a really nice guy.
Celebrate yourself …
I don’t really know how to answer this one but what makes me proud of myself is my resilience and work ethic. This life is fun but not easy and takes a lot to keep going.
Whose footsteps are you following in?
Getting ready for another special, writing projects are in the works and hopefully some more time on TV.
Where can we find you?
On quite a few TV shows now. Qi, which will be out soon. Dave, ITV. There’s a lot happening this year.
