John Boyega will next be seen on-screen co-starring with Tom Hanks and Emma Watson in The Circle, Star Wars Episode VIII, Imperial Dreams and the animated BBC miniseries Watership Down with James McAvoy and Ben Kingsley.
By next year, he will have made his West End debut starring in the German classic, Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck at The Old Vic. I guess a small blank space opened up in his calendar, because Boyega has just been confirmed to star in the second installment of the Pacific Rim franchise, and will begin production toward the end of the year! It will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight in his feature film debut. He has previously worked on successful fantasy TV series, such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, Smallville, Spartacus and innovative sci fi, such as Dollhouse, in various directing and producing roles.
The original 2013 Pacific Rim movie was created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham, directed by del Toro and grossed $411m worldwide. It co-starred our own Idris Elba, whose character, the tragic Marshall, Stacker Pentecost, nobly sacrificed himself to arm a thermonuclear bomb to help Charlie Hunnam’s character, Raleigh Becket, defeat the invading Kaiju and save the world. Boyega will play Pentecost’s son! Along with Femi Oguns under their Upper Room Productions shingle, Boyega will co-produce the film with Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, Jon Jashni, and del Toro. Parent, the Vice-Chairman of Worldwide Production at Legendary Pictures, said, “It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men.”
Del Toro is also delighted. “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”
Legendary Pictures said, “Legendary Pictures has tapped John Boyega, one of today’s most talented rising stars, the lead role for the second installment of its PACIFIC RIM franchise. The film, which is targeting a 4th Quarter start date is rapidly taking shape as a key project on Legendary’s upcoming slate.”
There is, as yet, no projected release date, but rumour of a Pacific Rim 3 have already surfaced. Good luck John! Just make sure you have a nice lie down every so often, please.
