Starting as a collaborative project between film maker Sophie Fiennes and iconic performer Grace Jones in 2005, the “multi-narrative” presentation of the private and public life of the age-defying Jamaican-born legend has secured a UK distribution deal through Picturehouse Entertainment!
A natural talent possessed of androgynous looks which influenced the cross-gender glamour of the I980s, Jones won enviable modelling contracts with Yves Saint Laurent and Kenzo Takada; Grammy nominations as a singer (Pull Up To The Bumper, 1980, Slave To The Rhythm, 1985); and unforgettable roles as Zula in Conan The Destroyer (1984), FIRST black female on a Bond promotional poster in Bond 14 as May Day in A View To A Kill (1985), the ever quotable Strangé in Boomerang (1991) and Evilene in The Wiz (1997). All of this meant that she has been a muse and inspiration for numerous artists, including South Sudanese supermodel Alek Wek, and musicians Annie Lennox, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Lorde, Nile Rodgers, Massive Attack and Gorillaz, amongst many others.
Financing for such an obviously fascinating subject was raised through BBC Films, the BFI in association with Roads Entertainment, the TBA21 Foundation and with the participation of the Irish Film Board (Bord Scannán na hÉireann).
Of the doc-biopic “Grace Jones – The Musical Of My Life”, director of programming & acquisitions at Picturehouse Entertainment, Clare Binns, said, “I am absolutely thrilled to be working once more with Sophie and her team on another exciting Doc… Grace is one of my favourite recording artists, her talent mixed with Sophie’s filmmaking skill and our expertise at delivering innovative music docs… means we’re looking at a killer combo. Bring it on.”
With a plan to include up-to-the-minute footage from a 2016 event, the film’s producers (Blinder Films’ Katie Holly, Sophie Fiennes, Shani Hinton and JW Films) have also secured a Grace Jones concert at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre next month in collaboration with Sligoville, u:mack and Mother.
Fiennes said, “This project with Grace has been an extraordinary journey… We look forward to welcoming her audience to participate in our film and contributing to conjuring the Grace magic.”
Picturehouse will release the Grace Jonesn – The Musical Of My Life in the UK in 2017.
