Home Carnival Queen & Reconnect: Digital Raving added to BBC’s Culture in Quarantine

Filmed in Lockdown is a series of new works of literary, musical, visual, and performance arts, commissioned for Culture in Quarantine by Arts Council England and BBC Arts.

The latest uploads to BBC’s Culture in Quarantine: Filmed in Lockdown series include Reconnect: Digital Raving directed by award-winning theatre director Matthew Xia and starring record-breaking beatboxer SK Shlomo, and Precious Onyenekwu Tatah and Somina Fombo’s Home Carnival Queen.

Reconnect: Digital Raving follows beatboxer, live looper, and theatre-maker SK Shlomo as he struggles to cope with the pain of bereavement in lockdown until he reconnects with friends, strangers, and the music he loves best in a spontaneous ‘remote rave’. The video – just over ten minutes in length is a short film adaptation of Reconnect, the postponed ‘rave-theatre’ solo show that was due to premiere at the 2020 Edinburgh Festival before Covid-19 caused its cancellation. A full-length solo theatre show, and an album by SK Shlomo, both called Reconnect, are planned.

Home Carnival Queen is a beautiful exploration of UK carnival culture told from the lens of black women through dance, music and mas costume. This alternative parade is realised through the streets and gardens of individual black artists – the everyday Queens, dressed in full carnival attire, dancing to original afrobeats and soca-inspired music. The five-minute video features choreography by Precious Onyenekwu Tatah and is directed by Somina Fombo.
