Nominations for the 68th Emmy Awards were announced yesterday by the Television Academy with Idris Elba getting another nomination for his role as DCI John Luther, in BBC’s popular police drama series ‘Luther’.

Beyonce’s seminal mini-movie-musical Lemonade has received 4 nominations. Groundbreaking and powerful documentary The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (Independent Lens) which took an in depth look at the rise and fall of the Black Panther party has also been recognised. Along with the revamped Roots mini-series which starred our very own Malachi Kirby and Simone Brown which has received 5 nominations. With the limited series The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story receiving 22 nominations – including best actor noms for Courtney B. Vance, Cuba Gooding and supporting actor for Christopher Darden.

Anthony Anderson from the ABC series black-ish was amongst the presenters who announced the nominations (black-ish also doing well in the nominations with Anthony and Tracee Ellis Ross receiving best comedy actor mentions)

What struck me the most after perusing through the extensive Emmy nomination category list, is how many diverse shows there has been on American television recently… and how quickly British TV needs to catch up.

The 68th Emmy Awards will air from The Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Sunday, September 18th on ABC, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
