The EE Rising Star Award honours a young actor or actress who has demonstrated exceptional talent and ambition and has begun to capture the imagination of the British public.

Past winners include John Boyega in 2016 and Noel Clarke in 2009.

This year actress Ruth Negga has been nominated. Although Negga has been putting in work since her debut 2004 in noted series’ Doctors, Criminal Justice (2008), Misfits (2010) and her excellent performance as Shirley Bassey in the BBC TV film, Shirley, it’s Negga’s recent feature in race film Loving, which is snatching attention left right and centre.

Loving, released in the UK November 2016, is a historical drama film written and directed by Jeff Nichols. Negga stars alongside Joel Edgerton (Jane Got A Gun, The Secret Life of Us) as Richard and Mildred Loving, the plaintiffs in the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court decision Loving v. Virginia, which invalidated state laws prohibiting interracial marriage.

Negga also starred in cult fave series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D as bad girl Raina, and sci fi series Preacher.

The other nominees are Laia Costa, Lucas Hedges, Tom Holland and Anya Taylor-Joy. The winner will be chosen by public vote.

The winner of the BAFTA Rising Star award will be announced at the EE British Academy Film Awards which will take place Sunday 14th February.
