The nominees for the 51st NAACP Image Awards have been announced, along with the news that the awards will air live via BET Networks.

With all the furor with #BAFTAsoWhite and the recent Oscar nominations being pretty much #OscarsSoWhite and in general #AwardsSoMale, the conversation turns to what about our own? Rightly so, the NAACP Image Awards capture everything from Film & TV, to literature, and music, and it’s where our British Black stars are very well represented.

Here are the categories and project our British Black stars and their projects are recongnised:

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind – Outstanding Independent Motion Picture, Outstanding Directing in a Motion Picture (Film) (Chiwetel Ejiofor)


Black and Blue – Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture (Naomie Harris).


Luther – Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Limited Series or Dramatic Special (Idris Elba).


For the first time, the NAACP Image Awards will air with a two-hour Live TV Special on BET Networks Saturday, February 22, 2020. Time difference aside, this should mean we’ll get to watch along in the UK. Watch this space we’ll keep you posted.
