Out Of Africa: Nigerian Pop Star Qing Madi Named In Billboard’s “21 Under 21” List For 2024

Fast-rising Nigerian recording artist, Qing Madi, has been included in this year’s Billboard “21 Under 21” List …

an annual celebration of the most innovative and influential young artists in the global music industry who are “breaking online and busting down genre barriers.”

Qing (pronounced “King”) makes the list alongside other high-flying superstars like d4vd, Jessie Murph, The Kid LAROI, and Tate McRae.

Excited to be featured on @billboard 2024 Under 21 annual celebration of the most innovative and influential young artist in the music industry”, the 17-year-old wrote in an Instagram post, reacting to the announcement.

Qing Madi, real name Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, was born on 1st July 2006 in Benin City in Edo State, located in Nigeria’s South-South region. She began performing at a young age, participating in school talent shows and singing in her church’s adult choir. In October 2022 her breakout single “See Finish” exploded on TikTok, and in July 2023 her follow-up single “Ole” (a collaboration with Nigerian singer-songwriter Bnxn) ranked high on the Nigerian music charts. 

On 17 November 2023, Qing Madi released her eponymous debut EP, which received favourable reviews from critics and spawned the smash hit “American Love.” In January she was inducted into Apple Music’s Rising Class of 2024, and last month she teamed up with U.S singer Chloe Bailey for a remix treatment of the track “Vision.” She is currently signed to JTON Music and cites Kendrick Lamar, Burna Boy and Wizkid as her influences.
