Founded in 1992 and based in Brixton, Pegasus Opera Company was created to redress the balance of BME artists working in British opera and to make opera more accessible.

This month, Pegasus Opera Company digitally brought together 26 professional opera singers from around the world to sing ‘Make Them Hear You’, a social justice song from the musical Ragtime. The performance, now available to watch via their YouTube channel, was made in response to the recent murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, with Pegasus Opera Company stating their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

In the past, the company has performed a gala at Bloomsbury Theatre in order to raise the profile of the Stephen Lawrence Trust, as well as performing at Sadler’s Wells to mark the bicentenary of the abolition of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Now they continue their long-standing work of making British opera more representative and accessible to black British communities, as they call upon all UK opera companies to stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.
