After charming audiences in Sarah Gavron’s Rocks, Bukky Bakray has landed her next leading role.

Self Charm written and directed by Ella Greenwood is a film that follows a young teen struggling with self-harm. Recommended by her therapist to try a number of alternatives which prove ineffective the teen settles on the advice to care for a plant as if caring for herself. BAFTA 2020 Breakthrough Brit Bukky Bakray will lead the cast that also includes newcomer Zambian-American actress Agness Nyama.

Greenwood films which is building a slate of mental health-based projects will produce the film, with Tallulah films co-producing, with Karina Michel Feld an executive producer.

Greenwood said of Bukky: “I’m so excited that Bukky will be taking on the lead role; she’s an incredible actress and fellow young Londoner, and I’m really looking forward to working with her,” she said of the film, “I wanted to make a film about self-harm, something which is rarely spoken about and yet many people go through. I want to make sure self-harm is not shown explicitly and that ways to get help are suggested.

Bakray made a name for herself in Sarah Gavron’s coming of age drama Rocks which was released earlier this year and can now be seen on Netflix. She is represented by Independent Talent.
