Film finance guru Jasmin Morrison presents an intensive online course breaking down in fine detail the intricacies of how the money for making films is raised and structured.
The Film Finance Masterclass is to be held over four weeks during S.O.U.L. Fest 2020. The sessions will take place each Tuesday during August at 10am and run for two hours each. The class commences on 4th August 2020. Please note that to get the most from this course you are encouraged you to book a ticket for each of the four sessions.
The topics covered each week will be as follows:
Week 1 (4th Aug 2020): Types of finance
In week 1 we will look at different types of finance including development, equity and debt finance. We will discuss what these types of finance are as well as expected terms, what they are secured against and when they are repaid.
Week 2 (11th Aug 2020): Sales and distribution
During our second session we will be focusing on film sales and distribution. Key topics will be understanding the different distribution deals including when payments occur and what a sales agent’s deal will look like.
Week 3 (18th Aug 2020): Finance in practice
Having discussed the many types of finance, the third week of the course will look at finance plans, recoupment waterfalls and net profits. This session will look to bring together our previously discussed topics to focus on how to structure a projects finances with multiple parties.
Week 4 (25th Aug 2020): Pitching
In the final week of the course we will be focusing on the first step in starting to secure finance by focusing on pitching. We will cover what to include in a pitch document, how pitch documents vary for the intended reader and give you actionable advice on how to start working on the pitch deck for your next project.
Jasmin Morrison is an experienced film professional having worked in production, post-production and film finance. In 2019 Jasmin founded Soul Cognition a film and TV consultancy company which is committed to education for filmmakers on the topics of film finance, sales and distribution. Soul Cognition works with individual clients as well as hosting courses, to date, SC has hosted course with Film London, Northern Ireland Screen and has participated as a guest speaker on the NFTS Course “Producing You First Feature Film”.
In addition to Soul Cognition, Jasmin also co-owns production outfit UnMannered Limited with Annika Ranin. The company is currently in production on two feature documentaries “Boarders” and “Max Vs Everest”. The company is also developing a number of feature and short, documentary and narrative projects.
Jasmin also serves as a consultant for Breaking Through the Lens.
Having previously served as the Investment Manager at London based The Fyzz Facility Jasmin has been involved in the financing of over 100 feature films and has experience working from conception to distribution.
