Iman is not a newbie on the music scene, having written with Mike Dean (Kanye West) and artist Ed Sheeran. The singer who writes all her own music is somewhat of connoisseur when it comes to pop music.

Iman has already enjoyed success with her first two singles Naïve and Golden getting critical acclaim along with the release of her latest single Wishing, it is obvious that she is well on her way to becoming the next big thing.

#TBB10 caught up with the artist to talk about her new single, her musical inspirations and what makes her stand-out amongst the crowd…

1# Can you introduce yourself?

My name is Iman and I’m a London based music artist who writes my songs and sometimes directs and co-edits my own music videos.

2# How did you get involved in music?

I would go to talent shows and network at all these types of events. I grabbed every opportunity and worked daily on developing my craft and still do.

3# What made you want to become a singer?

I always knew I wanted to be on stage, performing feels very natural to me and always has done. As a kid, I would spend most my time making up little songs and rhymes that I would force my poor brother to listen to!

4# Who are your biggest musical inspirations?

I rate a lot of UK artists such as Grades, Donaeo; Ms. Dynamite, Wiley, Skepta, Kano, Akala, Angel and Ray BLK. For me they all have a strong sense of identity and really own their sound. They are inspirational because most of these acts created a space for themselves in an industry that initially didn’t accept them. Wiley, Ms. Dynamite, Skepta, Donaeo especially are pioneers in the scene for me.
My inspiration for writing also comes from personal life experiences and situations that have happened to close friends of mine.

5# Tell us about your latest song Wishing what is the message in the song and why did you choose this as your latest release?

Wishing was initially a ballad when I first wrote it and it’s about a guy I was crushing on but I stayed away from him as he had a girlfriend. I have a few singles lined up for 2017 and Wishing just felt like the song to start the year with.

6# The song is now a House/Dance song, is this the genre of music that you’re most comfortable with or will you be switching it up?

I’m going to be switching it up with every release and I hope my vocals and writing style is what will tie it all in for listeners to know it’s all coming from the same artist. I’d often be told that my singles should sound the same and I tried to do it for a while but I found singing to the same tempo boring, and I’m not trying to write the same song twice. I’m lucky in that I have a vocal tone which can sit well over loads of genres in music and I want to continue exploring that.

7# Have you always written music and do you remember the first song you wrote?

I write all the lyrics and melody to my music and this is something that has always been important to me. I am open to writing alongside others especially if I feel I’m going to learn from them and I have done this in the past. My first song was called Love Fool and I wrote it in the middle of the night, I remember literally bolting upright from my sleep and the lines of the first two lyrics came to me. Very cheesy stuff but that was the beginning.

8# There are a lot of female artists coming out of the UK right now who are getting great feedback, including yourself with previous releases Naive and Golden. How much pressure is it for you as an artist to be relevant?

I don’t really focus on any of that, I just put energy into my creative process in the studio and how I want my art to be delivered upon release. I don’t tend to go through the process thinking about other artists and what they’re doing. I reckon if I did I would lose my mind and all that must be so exhausting, I’d rather keep it simple and keep it moving.

9# What do you think sets you apart from the rest?

People say my voice is distinctive so maybe that’s what sets me apart.

10# What can we expect from Iman in the coming months?

Throughout 2017 I will be releasing music and I am in the middle of my UK tour, so expect a lot more live shows and online content.
