Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom…
Respect is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice. With a superstar cast this promises to kick off 2020 with a musical bang.
Oscar-winning Jennifer Hudson is long filling the shoes she was destined to fill as she portrays Aretha. Fellow Oscar winner, Forest Whitaker is her father C.L. Franklin. A more surprising casting choice, is Marlon Wayans who, usually known for his slapstick and comedic roles has been cast as Ted White, Aretha’s first husband and father of her son Ted White Jr. The multi-award-winning Audra McDonald is Aretha’s mother Barbar Franklin. With Ms. Mary J. Blige playing Dinah Washington.
Directed by South African woman director Liesl Tommy who, this looks like it’s her feature debut as her work CV features TV work on shows including Queen Sugar, The Walking Dead and Insecure. Respect is written by Tracey Scott Wilson, and African American playwright, who has won awards for her theatre work. Moving into TV land, Wilson has also won awards for her work on critically acclaimed series’ The Americans, and as co-executive producer on episodes of Fosse, she received an Emmy nomination.
This should be good!
