The nominations for the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning from the Beverly Hilton Hotel by presenters Alfre Woodard, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Bell, and Sharon Stone, with, Hollywood Foreign Press Association president, Meher Tatna, and executive vice president of television at dick clark productions, Barry Adelman. Big Little Lies leads the TV categories with six nominations, while The Shape of Water takes the top position in the film section, with seven nominations.
It’s always when awards season kicks in we can have an overview of what resonated with the people who matter. Get Out of course, was the surprise runaway blockbuster, and it’s steady stacking up nominations. Controversy about where it sits in genre aside, it’s mentioned today as a comedy and is up for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. Along with its co-leading star, British Blacktor Daniel Kaluuya, getting a Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
Nothing else to really shake the tree about, Denzel gets a Best Actor nod for his role as Roman, in Roman J. Israel Esq. Octavia Spencer signed on the correct dotted line for her part in the award season favourite, the sci-fi Shape of Water, again she’s nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Oh actually, shaking the tree for Issa Rae who’s up for a Best Actress in a Comedy (TV) for Insecure! Mary J. Blige also looking like an award favourite is up against Octavia Spencer in Best Supporting Actress in Motion Picture for her role in Mudbound. Her song Mighty River, the soundtrack tune for Mudbound is up for Best Original Song.
More usual suspects, Black-ish up for best TV comedy, along with Anthony Anderson for Best Comedy Actor in a series, This is Us, star Sterling K. Brown is up for Best Actor, in a Drama series. Handmaid’s Tale is up for Best Drama series. The show stars British Blacktor O.T. Fagbenle.
