Star of Yardie, I May Destroy and The Maze Runner Aml Ameen is bringing us the UK’s first ever all black holiday film.
Boxing Day is a romantic comedy starring Ameen, alongside How to Get Away with Murder star Aja Naomi King, Little Mix member Leigh-Anne Pinnock making her film debut, and Golden Globe and BAFTA-winner Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Secrets and Lies).
Boxing Day is inspired by a day in Ameen’s life and follows Melvin (Ameen) a British author living in America who returns home to London for Christmas to introduce his American fiancée Lisa (King) to his eccentric British-Caribbean family. Their relationship is put to the test, as she discovers the world her fiancé has left behind.
Co-written by Ameen and Bruce Purnell Boxing Day is being financed by the BFI and Film4 along with Warner Bros Pictures. The film will be produced through Ameen and Purnell’s Studio113 along with Matthew G. Zamias, Damian Jones of DJ Films, Dominique Telson, and Blue Story producer and BAFTA 2020 Breakthrough Brit Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor.
Ameen says, “It is such an honour to be teaming up with Warner Bros. Pictures, Film4 and BFI to bring Black British Culture to the world in this universal holiday rom-com… It’s long been a dream of mine to capture films that reflect the wonderfully multi-cultural city that raised me while sharing stories from the diary of my life.”
Daniel Battsek, Ollie Madden, and Lauren Dark will serve as executive producers for Film4, alongside Farhana Bhula for the BFI and Thorsten Schumacher for Rocket Science, which is also handling international sales.
Boxing Day is currently filming in London.
