The BFI has announced its ‘Great8’ film projects that will get the chance to show footage to potential distributors.
Of the 8 films chosen, one of them is Aml Ameen’s feature directorial debut, Boxing Day – a romantic comedy about a UK author living in the US who returns home to London for Christmas to introduce his US fiancée to his eccentric British-Caribbean family. Ameen who is known for his roles in features The Butler (2013), Inside Man: Most Wanted (2019), the lead in Idris Elba’s directorial debut Yardie (2018), and recently he starred in Michaela Coel’s impactful series I May Destroy You.
Running for its 4th year, BFI and British Council take 8 projects from up-and-coming filmmakers from the UK and feature them in their Great8 showcase that gives international distributors and film festival programmers the chance to get an earlybird preview at Cannes Marché.
Taking place online the Great8 showcase will happen on June 17th. Cannes Marché begins June 21st and runs until the 25th.
Ameen is no stranger to working behind the camera, he’s directed, written and produced a number of shorts under his production company AmeenDream Entertainment.
Boxing Day is set to be released at the end of this year and stars Ameen, Aja Naomi King, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Sheyi Cole, Fraser James, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Martina Laird, and Tamara Lawrence. Ameen directs, produces, and has co-written alongside Bruce Purnell. Producers include Matthew G Zamias, Damian Jones, Aml Ameen, Dominique Telson, Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor. Production companies – DJ Films, Studi0 113, BFI, Film4, Warner Bros UK. Rocket Science will handle international sales.
The 74th annual Cannes Film Festival takes place from 6th – 17th July 2021, after being rescheduled from 11th – 22nd May 2021.
