Nominees for the  24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® for outstanding individual, cast and ensemble performances in film and television of 2017, as well as the honorees for outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles were announced this morning at the Pacific Design Center’s SilverScreen Theater in West Hollywood.
SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris introduced Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse, The Predator) and Niecy Nash (Claws, The Soul Man),who announced the nominees for this year’s Actors® live on TNT, TBS, truTV, tntdrama.com/sagawards,truTV.com and sagawards.org, TNT/TBS apps, and TNT/TBS Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels.
Prior to that, SAG Awards Committee Chair JoBeth Williams and Committee Member Elizabeth McLaughlin announced the honorees for outstanding action performances by film and television stunt ensembles.
Most importantly British Blacktor Daniel Kaluuya is nominated in the, Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Leading Role, category which makes it this third big award nomination (he’s up for a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice. He’s already been nominated for a Gotham Award – which he missed out on, but… whatever.) This is going to be an interesting journey for the young man from London. We expect him to get a BAFTA nomination, we expect him to get an Oscar nomination.
Back to the rest of the nominations, Daniel is essentially up for two awards as Get Out is also mentioned in SAG’s Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture category. Oh, and for Best Actor, he’s up against Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq) … which is huge!
Honourary mentions go to our other British Blacktors, Nathalie Emmanuel and Jacob Anderson, with Game of Thrones up for Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble In A Drama Series along with O.T. Fagbenle whose part in The Handmaid’s Tale will be recognised in the same category.
For the rest of the nominations, our fave Mary J. Blige is also up for two nominations, Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Supporting Role, for Mudbound which is also up for Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture. No mention of Octavia Spencer this time… which is interesting.
Sterling K. Brown is another obvs, he’s nominated in the TV section, for Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble In A Drama Series.
Other noms Uzo Aduba is up for Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Comedy Series – Orange is the New Black. (As much as I love Aduba’s Crazy Eyes… there are other characters who are just as brilliant… wonder why awards tend to get stuck on one person). Orange is the New Black, also gets an ensemble comedy nom.
Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble In A Comedy Series also mentions Black-Ish (ABC) and Anthony Anderson is up for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy series.
The lifetime achievement award goes to Morgan Freeman.
Fun Facts – Netflix the rebel platform is up for 19 nominations. Changing the game of how we watch TV and Film and apparently not making any profits in the process!
The 24th Screen Actors Guild Awards take place Sunday, January 21, 2018. Get the full nominations list here.
