In partnership with Newham Community Cinema and supported by Near Neighbours Fund The New Black Film Collective will be hosting a screening of legal drama film Roman J. Israel Esq.
Starring the Oscar award-winning Denzel Washington and British Blacktress Carmen Ejogo, Roman J. Israel, Esq. is set in the underbelly of the overburdened Los Angeles criminal court system. Washington is Roman a driven, idealistic defense attorney whose life is upended when his mentor, a civil rights icon, dies. Ejogo will play Maya Alston, an optimistic lawyer who Roman mentors. Although there’s undeniable chemistry implying there could be something more.
So far Roman J. Israel Esq. has racked up a stack of nominations including the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Black Reel Awards, NAACP Image awards (x2), Women Film Critics Circle Awards and won Heartland Films. Truly Moving Picture Award. There are also rumblings that Washington will get a Best Actor nod at the upcoming Oscars.
Ejogo, has had a great time of it starring as Seraphina Picquery in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them, and its upcoming sequel. She has also been cast in Season 3 of crime drama series True Detective.
