Lionsgate UK & Green Door Pictures Announce Winner Of ‘Write To Green Light’ TV Writing Competition

Following an exciting evening showcasing three outstanding scripts, Matthew Kirton has been named as the winner of the coveted Write to Green Light competition, hosted by Zygi Kamasa (Lionsgate UK) and Idris Elba (Green Door Pictures), receiving a paid development option with both companies.

The live reading final took place at the Savoy, London and was attended by a host of industry influencers. Things kicked off with a 15 minute reading of the three scripts picked out of over 250 submissions. The three finalist writers were Lauren Sequeira, Matthew Kirton and Ryan Brown who had the extracts of their work performed by a strong cast of professional actors which included Malachi Kirby (Roots, 2016), Tanya Fear (A Moving Image) and Hammed Animashaun (Flowers).

Each of the writers gave a short intro before their pieces were read.

Lauren Sequeira’s piece, Cleo inspired by Queen Cleopatra the story repurposed with a modern spin has been retold over a contemporary London gang setting.

Ryan Brown’s piece, We Are Your Children is based on the imagined events of the true life story of a serial killer who, between 1974 and 1976 murdered 14 gay men.

Matthew Kirton’s peice, Sin of God set in near-future Britain told the tale of a man who was executed by the state after being found guilty of murder by the state. Yet 15 days later he’s been given a second chance at redemption and drags himself out of this grave to face his new life.

Elba comments “The calibre of talent on show this evening has been outstanding, and we are grateful that so many key decision makers and influential members of the television industry came and offered their support. Jim O’Hanlon superbly directed a cast of talented experienced and emerging actors and it was fantastic to see the finalists’ scripts come to life through their performances. In my opinion all three scripts are worthy of development”
