Michael Browne Talks … Being a Couturier

Please tell us who you are and what you do, and where you’re from?

Michael Browne, Menswear Couturier/designer. Born in the Uk, Raised in Lagos Nigeria by Nigerian parents.

Describe your life right now in a word or one sentence …

Tell us about the work you do as a Couturier

The core of what I do is highly technical, artisanal fully hand made bespoke tailoring. This is offered via bespoke only timeless avant-garde collections that serve as a reference point for our high net-worth clients to commission pieces for their wardrobe. I would take them through a process of design consultations, comprehensive measurements/body figuration taken, individual paper patterns drafted for each piece and multiple fitting visits to perfect the fit. The garment(s) are then fully handmade in house by myself and my small team of elite artisans.

How did you get into it – did you have formal education or were you learning through experience?

No formal education. Mostly unpaid internships with Savile row master cutters/tailors and a lot of self learning/experimentation.

Why clothes and fashion?

It’s something I have always been passionate about.

What were the barriers to entry if there were any and how did you navigate them?

Mainly age, experience and the fact that most artisans work till they die. So vacancies don’t pop up often. I navigated by offering to work unpaid and making sure I added tangible value to whoever gave me an opportunity.

Being trained at Saville Row – what does that mean? What’s the process?

It means working under a master(s) artisan to learn their ways of doing things. The process varies depending on the master(s).

And were there any of the expected judgements of you being a black man in this space?

Probably, but that has never stopped me from getting what I wanted.

How did you become the go to guy for your clientele?

By creating an offering that didn’t really exist prior. And by honing my skills to the point where I could create sharp flattering lines on anyone who came through the door regardless of their body shape.

What’s your current plan B?

Probably start a bespoke inspired artisanal shoe brand & spend more time on stock market investing which I already do now.

What’s made you Sad, Mad, Glad this week

Sad, the fact that my father (Theophilus Oyeyinka Browne) is gone for good. He passed in the summer of 2021 Glad, a client’s joy after taking delivery of his first commission.
