TBB Talks … Yellowman With Star Nadine Higgin

The Pulitzer Prize-nominated Yellowman follows Alma, a dark-skinned Black woman and Eugene (Gene), a light-skinned Black man who have grown up together during the 60s in South Carolina. Through tracking the growth of the relationship, Orlandersmith explores the intersection of race and gender in a way I have never seen before onstage.

We spoke to actress and star of the two-hander Nadine Higgin who plays Alma. Her theatre credits include Legally Blonde (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and Savoy Theatre), The Lion King (Lyceum Theatre) and The Book of Mormon (Prince of Wales Theatre). Her television and film credits include Doctors and Military Wives.

Please tell us who you are and what you do, and where you’re from.

My name is Nadine Higgin and I am an Actor. Born and raised in Wembley by my Jamaican mother and nan!

Describe your life right now in a word or one sentence …

ROLLERCOASTER!!

Tell us about your latest project.

I am currently doing a play called Yellowman playing at the Orange Tree Theatre.

What’s your role in it?

I play a dark-skinned woman called Alma who falls in love with a light-skinned man called Eugene, in a world where they are not supported in that love.

How did it come about?

I was called in to an audition by Sophie Parrot, where I met our amazing director, Diane Page … I would say we clicked instantly … she may say otherwise! HA!

Highs, lows, solutions (tell us the high points, any obstacles to getting the project completed and how you resolved the obstacles).

This piece has been challenging from day one: it’s a two-hander, so there was a lot of text to learn, which I found very difficult and that took a lot of time. The play itself is also heavily based on trauma, colourism, alcoholism and self-hate, which can be very hard to face every day. To overcome this in rehearsals, the three of us would laugh a lot. We found humour in many corners and really took the time to enjoy and relish those lighter moments.

What are you watching right now?

I am currently watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Beverly Hills. Don’t judge me!

What are you reading right now?

I am about to start reading and breaking down A Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare.

What are you listening to right now?

I am ALWAYS listening to Anderson .Paak’s Venice and Malibu albums, also the History of American Slavery podcast.

The last thing you saw on stage?

The last thing I watched on stage was After The End at Stratford East and it was incredible, it was what made me want to tackle a two-hander play in the first place … be careful what you wish for.

What’s on your bucket list?

I don’t have a bucket list… hmm that may need to be something I start for 2023!!

Celebrate someone else (who do you rate right now?)

I rate a lot of people and I am inspired by a lot of people, especially my close circle of friends who are all doing incredible work and are successful! I am proud to call them my Tribe. I will say Megan Markle right now though, watching her handle being back in her place of trauma this week and handle the continuous nasties thrown her way, with such poise and grace has got to be the biggest flex. I really rate that!

Celebrate yourself … (make us proud of you)

Honestly I am always proud of being able to sustain a career in this industry whilst raising a child. That’s my big flex!

Where can we find you/watch/listen/read your project?

You can find me on Instagram and Twitter @nadine_higgin. Come and see me at the Orange Tree Theatre in Yellowman until 8th October.
